Week of September 8th
NOW and THEN ProjectUsing the 4-C’s
This month we are discussing in Social Studies how the past has influenced the present. We will compare and contrast how people lived, learned, worked, and played.
COLLABORATION-Interviews
To further enhance your learning, you will apply what you have learned and conduct an interview with a senior of your choosing (from the generation of your grandparents or great grandparents). You will ask your interviewee a set of questions that have been provided for you. Each student will also answer the same questions from his or her point of view. INTERVIEWS MUST BE DONE BY Tuesday, September 29th. Make a copy of the interview for yourself to assist you with the project at home.
CREATIVITY & CRITICAL THINKING-Project
You will gather the information from your interview, as well as your personal answers from the questions. You will compare and contrast the answers from the different generations. The information must be displayed in some form for a special viewing. Some ideas could be: posterboard, trifold board, power point, Now and Then scrapbook, etc. Please do not do a video. It is fairly loud in our room on presentation day and it is really hard for adults to listen to the video. Attached is the rubric that will be used to grade your display. The projects are due Wednesday, October 7th!
COMMUNICATION-Written Portion of the Project
This will take place when you present your Creativity and Criticial Thinking Project to families, peers and teachers.
All 3rd Grade students will display their projects for the parents and senior to view on the morning of October 8th. A special invitation will be sent out to the senior inviting them to this special showing.
I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences and what you learned from the perspective of another generation.
ENJOY and HAVE FUN! ---------3RD GRADE TEAM

Unit 1, Pages 31, 32, 33, and 34
Week of August 17th
For your homework this week you are going to create a Word Cloud online at Tagxedo.com that tells our class about you. A Word Cloud is a creative and unique way to show information about anything. If you go to our class website you will see a Word Cloud as an example. We will be using them as a cover for our writing journal this year.
You will first need to write your words in a word document and then cut and paste them into Tagxedo. (Directions below). Once you have typed your list of words in a word document, you can start creating your Word Cloud on Tagxedo.com.
What words might go in your word cloud? Think about.....
* Your name (for sure)!
* Things you love
* Words that describe you
* Your favorite activities/hobbies
* Your favorite subject or part of school
* Anything else that you want to share about yourself.
Go to www.tagxedo.com
1. Click on Create. This will bring you to a screen to create your own word cloud.
2. Click on Load. In the large box where it says "enter text" is where you will paste your words
from your Word document. Paste those words and then click "submit".
3. If you want to change the colors, click the arrow next to "theme" and color options will come up.
You can change the font. Orientation will change the way the words are arranged a little.
4. If you want to change the shape of your word cloud, click on the arrow next to "shape". Choose
your shape. It might take a minute for it to load once you click on it.
5. Back toward the top it gives you options for Saving and Sharing. Here you can save it as an
image on your computer, or print it out.
6. You do need to turn in your Word Cloud so we can put in in the front of your writing journal.
You can either print it yourself in color and bring it to school, or if you email the image to me I
can print it here at school. Be sure you are printing it on a full page and not a tiny image so
it looks amazing as your writing cover.
7. Have fun!!

Week of August 10th
We had a wonderful first day together and are very excited about the school year. For our first read aloud, we are reading the book Judy Moody was in a Mood. Not a Good Mood. A Bad Mood. It is about a young girl who is just starting Third Grade. In the book her teacher, Mr. Todd, asks the students to create a “Me Collage.” So we too, are going to create “Me Collages” to support building our classroom community. Your child will draw, cut out pictures, or paste things to their collage that tells the class what makes them, them. The collage will be on the outer cover of a writing journal. This journal will be used for writing through out the school year. This is where we need your help – yep, homework already! Please assist your child in finding photographs, magazine clippings, words, etc. that represent the items listed below and send them to school with this letter in the attached Ziploc bag marked with your child’s name by Monday, August 17, 2015. Try to find the first ten items listed below to be included on their collage. Then they can fill in any other items to make their collage unique.
Students will also have the opportunity to present their collage to the class.
Concepts that could be represented on your Me Collage:
- Your family.
- Your favorite pet or if you don’t have a favorite pet, think of a pet you would love to have.
